they are built and the beautiful lakes that besiege them. Kashmir had been
the getaway for the scorching summers for the Mughal kings. The marvelous
garden that they built are the avowals that rationalize their love for
this paradise.
Shalimar Garden The Delightful Garden of
Kashmir
Shalimar garden is an augmentation of the many gardens
and parks that in unison make this garden. Incorporated around 400 years
ago by the Mughal king Jehangir, for his wife Nur Jehan, this garden was
incipiently called as the Farah Baksh. Built with impeccable amenities
this garden has a canal in the center that was once the source of water
supply. Around 15 km from the TRC, the length and breadth of this garden
is 539 m by 182 m. it is four storeyed and once the fourth terrace
apportioned for the womenfolk. Also known as the 'garden of love', this
garden offersa picturesque view of the other gardens, terraces and lakes.
Nishat Garden The Paramount of all Gardens
Believed to be built by Queen Nur Jehan's brother, this
lake sprawls its stretch on the Dal lake. Though a little smaller than the
Shalimar Gardens, it is pre-eminent for its Chinar Trees that is scrambled
in perfect order. With Zabarwan mountains forming the back scene for this
lake, it has twelve terrace that represent the zodiac signs. Beside the
beauty one can also find the reminiscent of some buildings that were built
during the Mughal reign.
Chashmashahi The Royal Spring
Deriving its name from the water spring that waters it, this is the smallest of the Mughal Garden. However, this does not abate it from the other gardens. Build by the emperor Shah Jehan, who also built the Taj Mahal, this garden prides in having fountains, three terraces and conduit. Located on the hillside near the Nehru Memorial Park , this garden also has some waterfalls and a fresh water spring. Not only this there is a small shrine of Chashme Sahiba, near the garden which too has a fresh water spring. These fresh water springs are believed to have certain medicinal properties. However, one has to pay an entry free before admittance in this garden.
