Elephant Ride at Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary
Goa's rich coast and sprawling fun over the sands mean that you need never leave the beach. But if you can drag yourself away from the sea and sand, many happy hours can be spent adventuring in Goa's other riches. Let us take you deeper into the richness of this land, where Goa's other denizens abound - the wildlife that hides in the lush deciduous forests and birds that crowd the evergreen trees of Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary. Nestling close to Usgao, at the junction of Ponda, Sanguem and Sattari talukas, Bondla is the least rugged of Goa's sanctuaries, thereby still virgin to explore. Boot on the manicured gardens and give way to alluring butterflies and tiny tree frog, should they cross your path. Change the course of your holiday with the wings of a yellow bulbul or play hide-and-seek with a giant red Malabar squirrel! Enjoy some days of your life in pure joy, in wild adventure, in nature's lap. Only you have to plan a holiday to Bondla Sanctuary.
Bondla is a good place to unwind for a die-hard wildlife
vacationer. Start your uncivilised itinerary from the groomed outlook of
the sanctuary. Walk through the spacious green lawns of the well-tended
botanical gardens and admire a large variety of orchids. Remember to check
out the exhibits at the Nature Education Centre. Jaunt over an arched
wooden bridge to enter the mini zoo, and you would be soothed by the sound
of a gurgling stream, coursing like a silver ribbon below. Rejoice meeting
a number of convivial gentlemen, vicious animals which portray their real
self - wild boar, bison, porcupines, jackals, panthers, snakes and the
intriguingly named 'toddy cat'. Walk a few more steps to reach the
crocodile enclosure. Watch with a drooping jaw as the crocs escalade out
of water and take a breather over the rocks. Dive deep and you might see a
magnificent gaur turn your way or a sloth bear drawing its path into the
bush. Admire the sambhar and spotted deer delicately nibble at the
vegetation before you move on to see the elephants.
The dark deep forests of Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary is in Ponda Taluka in Central Goa, 20 km from Mollem National Park. To get to the sanctuary, drive on NH 4A and turn off at Tiska. Make your way via Sancordem and Satpal until you reach the wilds. You can even get a taxi from Panjim (52 km) or Margao (36 km) via Tiska, Usgao and Gajnem to reach the wild adventure destination at Bundla. The sanctuary is open round the year and turns on every tourist during the monsoons, when it is green and cool. However, the best time is the post-monsoon season, October to March. In this season the forests are lush and the watering holes are full. Thus, sightings are high.
