Se Cathedral , Old Goa
It is huge. And from top to bottom it is intricately carved. Pages of history embellishing the walls around the altar. Built in 1562 in Manueline with Corinthian style of architecture, the Se Cathedral today stands larger than any church in Goa and even Portugal, if can be said so. The history traces back to the time of Dominicans, who were the first missionaries to be sent to India by the Portuguese. They were originally the chaplains of the fleet brought by the conquering Portuguese naval general Alfonso de Albuquerque. Designed by engineers Julio Simao and Ambrosio Argueiro, the Se Cathedral is said to be "a grandiose church worthy of the wealth, power and fame of the Portuguese who dominated the seas from the Atlantic to the Pacific".
This majestic church with its sky-high ceilings is a do-not-miss attraction of Goa. Visit the west-facing cathedral bedecked with Tuscan exteriors, its square towers in Manueline style flanking the 98-ft high facade. Remember to see the surviving tower housing a golden bell that was cast in Cuncolim, a village in Salcete Taluka in the 17th century. Walk along the Corianthian interiors with lofty pillars diving the 250-ft long central nave from the side aisles. Don't miss the 15 alters dedicated to several identities - Our Lady of Hope, Our Lady of Anguish, and Our Lady of Three Needs - and the grand alter dedicated to St. Catherine of Alexandria. You will be amazed to see the ornate main altar with carved frames depicting the life of St. Catherine and a magnificent crucifix. Do visit the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament and of the Cross of Miracles, both embellished with exquisite filigree work on the screens.
This sacred site of worship is located just opposite the Basilica de Born Jesus in Old Goa. This small patch of virgin land is situated on the banks of the serene Mandovi River in east Tiswadi Taluka in Central Goa. Drive comfortably on NH 4A, which begins as the Ribander Causeway, runs east along the Mandovi River, through the rustic and continues south-east to Ponda.
