Belur in the district of Hassan in the state Karnataka is
one of the major tourist attractions along with Halebid and Hampi. Located
at a distance of 222 kms from Bangalore, the state capital, Belur was once
the capital of the Hoysala Empire. Known to the world for its magnificent
Hoysala Temple Complex, Belur has numerous intricately built temples which
are the sheer example of the glorious past of the Hoysala Kings. The most
famous Chennakeshava temple at Belur was completed in 1116 by Hoysala
Vishnuvardhana after a continuous 103 years of painstaking work to
commemorate his victory over the Cholas. The construction of the temple was
completed by the grandson of Vishnuvardhana. The facade of the temple is
packed with meticulously carved intricate sculptures and freizes, which
soothes the eyes of every single art lover. The temple are a number of
filigreed pillars inside.
The Veeranarayana temple here houses the shrines of Kappe Chenniga, Andal,
Saumya Nayaki, and other dieties.
